App Store Case Erupts: $2 Billion Appeal Filed!

Ana sayfa / News

Apple is taking its legal battle against the European Union’s record fine of nearly $2 billion over App Store rules to a new level. The tech giant is formally appealing the massive fine, arguing that the decision regarding its music streaming apps is unfair. This development opens a new chapter in the long-running Apple App Store case.

At the heart of this case are Apple’s “anti-redirection” rules, which prevent app developers from informing users about cheaper subscription options outside the App Store. The European Commission ruled that these rules distort competition and create a disadvantage, particularly for competitors like Spotify. According to the Commission, Apple has abused its market dominance for a decade, causing consumers to pay more.

However, Apple claims the decision is not supported by facts. The company emphasizes that the App Store provides a secure and global platform that has helped Spotify become Europe’s largest digital music service. According to Apple, Spotify doesn’t pay Apple any commission on sales made through the app, which makes the penalty illogical.

Apple’s appeal means the case will be taken to the EU General Court. This process can often take years and once again demonstrates how fierce the power struggle is between tech giants and regulators. In its defense, Apple states that the European Commission has failed to provide concrete evidence of consumer harm and has ignored the dynamic nature of the market. This appeal has the potential to profoundly affect not only the fine but also the future operation of the App Store.
